  • Nadia Podoroska kicked off qualifying by taking revenge on Kaja Juvan, who had defeated her a week ago at the same stage of Acapulco, winning 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-1 despite Juvan saving a match point in the second set.
  • Stefanie Voegele also overturned a result from last week, avenging her Acapulco qualifying loss to Sara Errani to triumph 7-6(2), 7-5 this time.
  • Top qualifying seed Jasmine Paolini, who had withdrawn from Acapulco due to illness, held three set points over Kristina Kucova in the first round.
  • However, former World No.71 Kucova bounced back to eliminate Paolini 7-5, 6-1.
  • Qualifying wildcard Ana Sofia Sánchez engaged eighth seed Caroline Dolehide in a two-hour, seven-minute battle in the first round.

  • Eighth seed Wang Yafan rebounded from her first-round loss as defending champion in Acapulco to move past Lara Arruabarrena in straight sets.
  • Olga Govortsova posted her first WTA main draw win since Québec City 2018, extending her winning streak to eight with a defeat of lucky loser Caroline Dolehide from a set down in the first round.
  • Former World No.1 Venus Williams won the first set over qualifier Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who had upset her in their last meeting at Roland Garros 2014.
  • However, former World No.26 Schmiedlova - on the comeback from a knee injury that sidelined her for six months last year - roared back to level the match at a set all.
  • Williams fell away in the decider against Schmiedlova to extend her losing streak to five, with the seven-time major champion's last victory coming over Barbora Strycova in Beijing last year.
  • The 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over two hours and 29 minutes was Schmiedlova's first at WTA main draw level since Madrid last year.
  • 18-year-old World No.497 Emma Navarro was last year's Roland Garros junior runner-up, and threatened an upset after taking the second set against fifth seed Sloane Stephens.
  • However, Stephens raced through the decider to snap her five-match losing streak and emerge a 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 victor with her first win of 2020.
  • 2016 champion Heather Watson was fresh off a second Mexican title in Acapulco, but could not hold on to double break leads in the first and third sets against Tatjana Maria.

  • Tenth seed Lauren Davis needed just 69 minutes to dispatch qualifier Nadia Podoroska in the first round.
  • Top seed Elina Svitolina got her campaign off to a positive start with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Danka Kovinic.

  • However, Wang would survive Sharma 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-3 in two hours and 53 minutes - the third-longest match of the year so far, having lost the second-longest to Alison Riske at the Australian Open.
  • Bidding for her first consecutive match wins since Wuhan last September, Sloane Stephens took the first set on a tiebreak over Acapulco finalist Leylah Fernandez.
  • World No.126 Fernandez would rebound to score her second Top 50 win of the year 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-3 over Stephens - extending her 2020 win-loss record to 12-4.
  • Anastasia Potapova battled her way into her third quarterfinal of the year, saving triple match point before notching a three-set win over Tamara Zidansek.
  • Arantxa Rus made her first WTA singles quarterfinal since Palermo last summer, upsetting No.10 seed Lauren Davis, 7-5, 6-0.
  • Johanna Konta reached the Monterrey quarterfinals for the second time in her career, matching her 2016 performance, after ousting Tatjana Maria, 7-6(4), 6-3.
  • Elina Svitolina continued an excellent tournament debut, moving past qualifier Olga Govortsova in straight sets to reach the quarterfinals.
  • Olga Govortsova was seeking the second Top 10 win of her career, but fell to Svitolina, 6-3, 6-4.

  • In a two-hour and 40-minute nail-biter, Johanna Konta outlasted Anastasia Potapova in their quarterfinal battle, saving two match points in the process.
  • 18-year-old Potapova pushed Konta to a final-set tiebreak, but was unable to finish off the match and claim the third Top 20 win of her career.
  • Top seed Elina Svitolina ousted teenage sensation Leylah Fernandez in their quarterfinal clash, booking a spot in her first semifinal of the season.

  • Bouzkova's love affair with Mexico continued: the Czech had won two ITF W25 titles here as a teenager, reached the Guadalajara 125K final last year and sealed her maiden WTA final with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Konta.
  • Arantxa Rus had reached her first WTA quarterfinal at Guangzhou 2008, and 12 years later came up against Elina Svitolina in her maiden semifinal.
  • Svitolina was in ruthless form, though, dropping just one game to Rus as she raced into her first final of the season.
  • In doubles, Kateryna Bondarenko won the first title of her return from a second maternity leave alongside Sharon Fichman after a 4-6, 6-3, [10-7] final win over Miyu Kato and Wang Yafan - and Bondarenko's daughter Karin got her hands on the trophy.
  • In the singles final, Elina Svitolina started off by dropping an 11-minute opening game, but stormed back to take a grueling 68-minute first set, 7-5.
  • Marie Bouzkova would not go down without a fight in her first WTA singles final, and took the second set 6-4 after 55 minutes.
  • However, it would be top seed Svitolina who would triumph at the end, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, after three hours of intense action.
  • Bouzkova showed off the spoils of her first WTA singles final after the match. Her singles ranking improved ten spots, from No.57 to No.47, following her exploits in Monterrey.
