Top-seeded Swiatek was forced to regroup after being outhit by Collins in the second set, but the Pole eventually eased ahead 4-0 in the third set before Collins retired from the match after two hours of action.

Zheng awaits: Swiatek will face a second straight Top 10 player when she meets No.6 seed Zheng Qinwen of China in the semifinals. Zheng ended the career of former World No.1 Angelique Kerber earlier on Wednesday, edging the German in a third-set tiebreak.

The winner of that match will reach the gold-medal final, and the loser will play for the bronze. Swiatek has a commanding 6-0 head-to-head lead over Zheng.

Match moments: On Wednesday, Swiatek had minimal trouble taking the one-set lead, although a shift in momentum was on the cards when she had to fend off the first three break points she faced in the last game of the set.

Indeed, Collins was overpowering with her service returns in the second set, using depth and speed with that shot to break Swiatek twice and storm into a decisive third set.

But Swiatek quickly raced to a double-break lead in the final set, and Collins needed to take a medical-time out while trailing 3-0. Collins got on the scoreboard at 4-1 but the American could go no further, sending Swiatek into the semis.

Vekic wins late-night thriller: No.13 seed Donna Vekic of Croatia completed the Olympic semifinal lineup, notching a narrow 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(8) victory over No.12 seed Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine after midnight on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The pair went down to the wire, befitting a contest between two players who posted career-best major results this year. Kostyuk made her first Grand Slam quarterfinal at the 2024 Australian Open, while Vekic made her first Grand Slam semifinal a month ago at Wimbledon.

At the end of a tense third set, Vekic saw her first two match points slip away before the tiebreak. Vekic then found herself a hair away from defeat when Kostyuk held her own match point at 6-5 in the decisive breaker.

But Vekic swatted away that chance with a bold forehand winner to reach 6-6 and keep her medal hopes alive. Kostyuk saved two more match points in the thriller, but Vekic slammed an ace on her fifth match point, clinching the win after a grueling 2 hours and 59 minutes.

Vekic will take on Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia for a spot in the gold-medal match. World No.70 Schmiedlova notched her second straight Top 10 win by beating reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday.

Vekic and Schmiedlova have only played once before on tour. Vekic beat Schmiedlova 6-0, 6-1 on the indoor hard courts of Luxembourg back in 2018.
