MATCH POINTS
No.2 seed Magdalena Rybarikova was the victor in her sole previous meeting with Mona Barthel. The Wimbledon semifinalist won 6-3, 7-6(5) in the first round of Miami in 2013.
This time last year, No.5 seed Mihaela Buzarnescu was ranked No.374 and playing an ITF $60,000 event in Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary. The Romanian would win that trophy - defeating Patty Schnyder in the first round and Danka Kovinic in the final - for her biggest title to date, and one that would kickstart a meteoric rise into the Top 30 this week.
No.3 seed and Indian Wells champion Naomi Osaka is making her second appearance in Nottingham this year, and reprises her second-round match against Denisa Allertova at last year's US Open today. The Japanese No.1, who had been fresh off her first career Top 10 win over Angelique Kerber, defeated Allertova 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
Both Dalila Jakupovic and Magdalena Frech are perched at career high rankings this week, of No.118 and No.119 respectively. 20-year-old Frech scored her maiden WTA-level victory at Roland Garros against Christina McHale, and is bidding to make her first WTA quarterfinal. 27-year-old Jakupovic made her own WTA quarterfinal debut in Bogotá in April, and went on to make the final four there.
