Australian Open fashions unveiled: Sharapova reaches for the sky, Wozniacki saves the ocean

Tennis clothing companies have once again succeeded in merging original style and top performance to help players bring their A-game to the sunny courts at Melbourne Park.

Marija Zivlak of Women’s Tennis Blog will show us the variety of looks which are gracing the courts for the 2019 Australian Open.

Maria Sharapova likes to experiment with tennis fashion and even though prints have been very popular, especially in recent years, it simply wasn’t the Russian’s thing (the last time the five-time Grand Slam champion incorporated a pattern in her outfit was almost a decade ago).

Times have changed, though, as Sharapova and Nike created this bright-sky-inspired dress for Melbourne. At closer look, you can see that the fabric of this dress is ribbed, allowing for greater stretch and comfort.

Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina and many others are expected to sport new NikeCourt separates: most probably the Nike Spring Breathe Slam Top and the Nike Spring Flex Short.

Reminiscent of the '90s, the bold semi-cropped top features checkered mock collar and multi-color stripes on just one sleeve.

Top players will most probably pair their NikeCourt tops either with these denim-printed shorts or this skirt.

The Nike spring collection also offers a great variety of bottoms, including a checkered skirt available in several colors.

Serena Williams makes her own rules and customizes her outfits as she pleases.

Nike created the Spring Player Dress that features waist-accentuating stripes and a unique triangular cutout on back, but the tennis legend decided to remove the skirt and turn the dress into a playsuit.

Adidas’ representatives, led by defending champion Caroline Wozniacki, will wear clothes that incorporate yarn made by Parley for the Oceans, i.e. yarn made from recycled waste.

Promoted by the slogan “From threat into thread”, the high-performance apparel will serve top athletes in Melbourne, whilst also preventing a certain amount of plastic waste from reaching the oceans.

Angelique Kerber, Caroline Wozniacki and Naomi Osaka are slated to wear the adidas Spring Parley Tank, whose blue ombre print celebrates oceans, and the adidas Spring Parley Skirt, which, just like the tank, features 3D fabric structure for reduced cling.

Garbiñe Muguruza will go for the adidas Spring Parley Dress, a sleeveless design with notch collar.

The Spaniard will also rock the stunning adidas Spring Parley Zone Heartracer Jacket that includes a diagonal two-way zipper for easy on and off.

Two new shoe styles have been released as part of adidas’ cooperation with Parley: the adidas adizero Ubersonic 3 Parley and the adidas SoleCourt Boost Parley.

When we think of Fila, we think of the color navy and classic cuts, but the brand’s collection ready to be launched at the Australian Open is all about light pink, ruffles and stripes.

Here we can see Karolina Pliskova in the Fila Spring Stripe Trim Tank and Fila Spring Double Ruffle Skirt.

Pliskova’s Axilus 2 Energized footwear is also in baby pink.

Lotto’s top representative Elise Mertens has already worn her Australian Open clothes in Brisbane and Sydney.

The collection is called Tennis Tech and it combines a geometric black and white optical graphic with trendy color contrast.

The beauty is in the details. Asics nurtures clean, sporty designs that have high-performance properties and subtle elements.

In Melbourne, Julia Goerges will debut the Asics Gel-Cool Tank Top, a papaya-colored item equipped with active cooling technology that accelerates ventilation. The tank includes water repellent processing, mesh and stretch to ensure that players feel comfortable, even when they sweat a lot on hot Australian days. The subtle curved hem of the coordinating grey skort gives a touch of uniqueness to the simple design.

Goerges’ shoes for hot Melbourne courts will be the Asics Solution Speed FF.

Venus Williams doesn't decide on her outfit until the day of her match. Waiting for the Australian Open to start, the American was spotted practicing in her EleVen Morning Glory collection, but for her Melbourne opener she decided to launch the Diva Dress from the brand new Caracas collection.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands teamed up with Lucky in Love to create a bold, limited-edition collection inspired by the American’s fun-loving personality, her appreciation of daring fashion and bodyart.

Bethanie’s famous floral tattoo is the highlight of the collection, as we can see in her Aussie Mesh Crop Top and Aussie Hi-Pleated Scallop Skirt.

The new gear has already seen the light of the day in the Australian Open tune-up period and Bethanie even said on Twitter that the clothes are almost sold out.

Lacoste’s dresses for Dominika Cibulkova used to be mostly navy or white with straight silhouettes. The brand’s predominantly traditional approach to tennis fashion is giving way to a refreshing, youthful look.

Entering her tenth year as a Lacoste representative, Cibulkova will head to the Australian Open with this beautiful blue dress accentuated by light pink diagonal stripes. Although the Slovak looks perfect in straight cuts, this more feminine shape of the dress also suits her great.

New Balance is just introducing new colors to their traditional striped racerback tanks. Here we can see Heather Watson in the Spring Tournament Seamless Tank, an engineered design combining colors voltage violet and light reef. The plain white Spring Tournament Court Skirt is laser perforated with trendy rounded bottom hem.

As we can see, the WTA fashion enthusiasts have many reasons to look forward to the 2019 Australian Open!
