NEWPORT BEACH, CA, USA - No.3 seed Eugenie Bouchard rallied from a set down to defeat former US Open junior champion Kayla Day in her first match after losing to Serena Williams at the Australian Open.
The Canadian defeated Day, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, in her first match, and the second round of the Newport Beach 125K series event on Tuesday.
The event is the final stop in this year's Oracle Challenger Series, which also consists of WTA 125 events in Chicago and Houston last year.
Seeded players had a successful Tuesday overall, as they went 4-1 in completed second round matches, with No.10 seed Sachia Vickery also succumbing to a knee injury.
Also advancing were No.2 seed Tatjana Maria, No. 7 seed Jessica Pegula, and No.9 seed Marie Bouzkova, who took down Veronica Cepede Royg, Francesca Di Lorenzo and Olivia Rogowska, respectively.
The lone seed to fall a completed match in the second round was No.13 seed Misaki Doi, who fell in three sets to American Christina McHale, while Vickery was forced to retire when trailing by a set and a break to France's Harmony Tan at 6-4, 4-2.
Top seed Rebecca Peterson, fresh off a second round loss to Maria Sharapova at the Australian Open, is in action against American Kristie Ahn on Wednesday.
The top two American women’s and men’s points-getters over the course of the Series receive wildcards into their respective singles main draws at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.
The inaugural edition of the Newport Beach event was won by Australian Open semifinalist Danielle Collins last year.
