Dayana Yastremska holds a 2-0 record over No.12 seed Garbiñe Muguruza, with both wins coming in the past five months - 6-2, 6-3 in the second round of Luxembourg last October, and 7-6(5), 6-1 in the Hua Hin quarterfinals two-and-a-half weeks ago on the way to the 18-year-old's second WTA title. Those victories constitute 100% of Yastremska's Top 20 scalps to date; a third today would make the Ukrainian the youngest player to hold three Top 20 wins.
Ajla Tomljanovic and Zheng Saisai will also reprise a Hua Hin encounter today; the Australian won 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals in Thailand en route to her fourth career final.
No.11 seed Daria Kasatkina will bid for her first WTA main draw win of the year against qualifier Magdalena Frech. The Russian is 0-4 at this level so far in 2019, though she picked up a victory in Fed Cup Group 1 play two weeks ago against World No.669 Karen Barritza.
Yulia Putintseva leads the head-to-head against Lesia Tsurenko 2-1, with her victories coming in New Haven qualifying in 2015 and via retirement the following year in the first round of Moscow. However, Tsurenko triumphed 6-3, 6-2 in their most recent encounter, in the second round of Hobart last year.
Former World No.41 Lucie Hradecka, returning from knee surgery that sidelined her for eight months in 2017-18, has come through qualifying to make her first WTA main draw since her quarterfinal run at Québec City 2017. The 33-year-old Czech, now ranked No.456, was an alternate into qualifying but navigated past Eden Silva and Polona Hercog in three sets - the latter her first Top 100 win since May 2017 - to extend her winning streak to nine following victory two weeks ago at the Trnava ITF W25.
Former World No.8 Ekaterina Makarova is seeking to snap a six-match losing streak against Aliaksandra Sasnovich today. The Russian has not won a match since upsetting Julia Goerges in the second round of the US Open.
Viktoria Kuzmova and qualifier Bernarda Pera will reprise their sole previous encounter in the second round of Guangzhou last year, won by Pera 6-2, 6-3.
