Ferro claims Schmiedlova upset in Guadalajara

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - The top two seeds are out of the Abierto Zapopan before the quarterfinals.

France's Fiona Ferro defeated No.2 seed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in second round action at the WTA 125K event on Wednesday, earning a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Ferro's compatriot, top seed Alizé Cornet was upset by former Wimbledon junior champion Sofya Zhuk in the opening round on Monday.

With the top two seeds dismissed, No.3 seed Tatjana Maria is the highest-ranked player remaining, and the German veteran booked her spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nao Hibino in Wednesday's first match on Center Court.

Joining Maria in the last eight are No.8 seed Magda Linette, who needed three sets to get past Swiss qualifier Conny Perrin, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1; home favorite and wildcard Renata Zarazua, who scored a big win over former French Open finalist Sara Errani, 6-1, 6-4; and rising stars Olga Danilovic and Marie Bouzkova, who defeated Russians Anna Blinkova and Vitalia Diatchenko, respectively.

Veronika Kudermetova came through an all-Russian second round clash with Zhuk in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 6-1, while later action saw former US Open semifinalist and World No.12 Yanina Wickmayer take on Kristyna Pliskova.
