No.6 seed Katerina Siniakova has had a somewhat lean year in singles so far, compiling just a 2-9 record in WTA main draws, but will be buoyed by a 3-0 lead over Dalila Jakupovic. The Czech has not dropped a set to Jakupovic yet, having won in ITF events in Westende in 2013 and Maribor in 2014 as well as a 6-3, 6-0 victory in Stuttgart qualifying in 2014.

No.1 seed Karolina Pliskova's withdrawal moved Barbora Strycova into her position at the top of the draw as the No.9 seed - where Strycova will take on Mona Barthel for the eighth time. The German leads the head-to-head 4-3 overall, including a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win in their most recent and only previous clay meeting - here in Prague in the 2017 semifinals. That result snapped a streak of three victories for Strycova dating back to 2012.

An all-Slovak first-round find No.7 seed Viktoria Kuzmova taking on former World No.26 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Their head-to-head is all square at 1-1, both matches coming on clay, with Schmiedlova taking their 2017 Stare Splavy ITF W25 semifinal 6-1, 6-4 and Kuzmova gaining revenge in the Budapest ITF W100 semifinals last year 6-2, 6-0.

An all-American derby between No.5 seed Danielle Collins and Jennifer Brady also takes place in the first round. Collins was the victor 7-5, 7-6(2) in their only pro meeting to date, in the second round of the Macon ITF W50 event in 2016, and also won a junior encounter in Plantation, Florida 6-0, 6-3 in 2011.

Former World No.5 Lucie Safarova kicks off the final event of her career in doubles, partnering compatriot Barbora Stefkova - with whom she reached the Mallorca final last year - and taking on Makoto Ninomiya and Yana Sizikova.

In qualifying, Denisa Allertova will seek to make her first WTA-level main draw since Wimbledon last year against Jil Teichmann. Indeed, Wimbledon was the Czech's last match for another six months due to injuries, and she would only return at the Australian Open in January. Since coming back, she has compiled an 8-5 record, including an ITF W25 final showing in Trnava in February.
