Rogers Cup 2019: Halep, Serena and Barty lead stacked field

TORONTO, Canada – Defending champion Simona Halep, WTA World No.1 Ashleigh Barty and Serena Williams have all confirmed their intent to play in the Coupe Rogers présentée par Banque Nationale.

The 64-strong main draw for the Premier 5 event will also include 12 qualifiers and five wildcards, with tournament due to begin on August 5.

Halep is the defending champion of the Canada-based hardcourt event, having defeated Sloane Stephens, 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-4 last year. It was the second time that the Romanian, who is the WTA World No.7, had lifted the trophy.

Serena Williams, meanwhile, is a three-time champion, having last won the tournament in 2013.

Other leading players in the field who have tasted title glory at the event include Caroline Wozniacki (2010), Petra Kvitova (2012), Belinda Bencic (2015) and Elina Svitolina (2017).

WTA World No.1 Barty, who also leads the Porsche Race to Shenzhen, will be seeking to improve her best performance in Toronto, which was a push to the semifinals in 2018, when she was defeated by Elina Svitolina.
