NEW YORK, NY, USA -- As Monday's start of the US Open main draw approaches, 15-year-old American Coco Gauff
“I try not to think about it, because it'll put too much pressure on [me],” the young American told Teen Vogue, regarding everything that's been written about her since emerging on the international stage.
"Now I have people, like, stopping me on the street and everything,” said World No.141 Gauff, who is the youngest player in the Top 500 of the WTA Rankings. “I guess it's a plus.”

The teenager will be competing in the main draw of the US Open for the very first time, having received a wildcard. This will follow her sensational Grand Slam main draw debut at Wimbledon, where she reached the round of 16 before falling to former World No.1 Simona Halep, who went on to clinch the Wimbledon title.

Gauff went on to capture her first WTA title at the Citi Open in Washington, D.C., winning the doubles event alongside compatriot Caty McNally.
Despite her outwardly meteoric rise in stardom, Gauff has been determined to achieve her goals since making tennis her sport of choice at the age of six. “When it comes to something like tennis, [Coco] works hard," said her father and coach, Corey. "This is not an accident. She might be overnight popular, but she’s not an overnight success.”
One of her earliest coaches, Jewel Peterson, agreed about Gauff's work ethic. “Coco is a coach’s dream,” Peterson said. “I never had to tell her, ‘Run your laps, do your dynamic.’ I never had to tell her how to start her practice. She did it on her own. To this day, I still have not seen anybody that driven.”

As she heads to New York, Gauff's mentality is still oriented towards her family and her long-time close friends. Even when receiving messages from icons such as Michelle Obama and Solange, her initial instinct is to share them with her best friend.
Her father gets less excited about those tweets and direct messages: “My dad, he doesn't really know all the people that I'm into, so he's like, 'Oh, who is he? Oh, that's cool.'”
“I don't really look at my cousins as cousins, more as friends, because I actually hang out with them,” Gauff added. “Now that everything has happened, I know that they are going to always have my back.”
Gauff will find out what her US Open path could look like when the the main draw for 2019's last major is determined on Thursday.
