My Favorite Places: California with Sloane Stephens

If a friend was visiting California, what three places would you recommend for them to visit?

Sloane Stephens: The Carmel, Pebble Beach and Monterey area would be my first choice. It has absolutely breathtaking views, nice beaches and, of course, great golf. Another place I would recommend is the restaurant, Nobu Malibu. I love the rock shrimp tempura and black cod. Nobu at the Indian Wells tournament is pretty awesome as well.

Finally, there is San Diego Zoo. I have always loved going to zoos since I was a little kid. It's fun to see animals from other parts of the world. 

Off the tourist trail, what are California’s hidden gems?

Sloane Stephens: I grew up in Fresno and the city's Shanghai China Cuisine Restaurant is a family favorite. It's only a short drive from my grandparents' house. The Joshua Tree National Park is always good for a great hike, it has some really great trails.

There is also Bacara Resort in Santa Barbara which is located on the cliffs over looking the Pacific Ocean. It's such a beautiful setting outside the hustle of the big city. I find it a super great spot to get away from the every day madness and just relax. 

Away from the tennis court, can you share a memorable experience you've had in California?

Sloane Stephens: It has to be taking a helicopter ride to Catalina Island, off the coast near LA.
