Makarova, Soares dump Stephens, Sock for mixed quarterfinal spot

LONDON, Great Britain - No.2 seeds Ekaterina Makarova and Bruno Soares handled a tough challenge from American duo Sloane Stephens and Jack sock to move into the Wimbledon quarterfinals in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5.

A regular doubles pairing, Makarova and Soares got their first and only taste of Grand Slam success when they partnered to win the US Open back in 2012. Today’s win and passage into the quarterfinals marks their biggest success ever since.

The highest seeded team in the quarterfinals, Makarova and Soares will face off against Nicole Melichar and Alexander Peya, the No.11 seeds, in the next round.

Also through to the quarterfinals, the unseeded duo of Victoria Azarenka and Jamie Murray continue on a tear, edging past the No.12 seeds Johanna Larsson and Matwe Middelkoop, 7-6(6), 6-3.

Joining them are No.9 seeds Katarina Srebotnik and Michael Venus, came back from a set down to knock out No.5 seeds Chan Hao-Ching and Nikola Mektic 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-4, and No.10 seeds Abigail Spears and Juan-Sebastian Cabal, who moved past Kirsten Flipkens and Robin Haase 6-3, 6-4 to make their way into the quarterfinals.
