LOS ANGELES, CA, USA - Reigning US Open champion Sloane Stephens took home top honors at the 2018 ESPYs, being named the best female tennis player of the year in last night’s ceremony.

“As an American athlete, the ESPYs is something that all athletes I think really look forward to every year,” Stephens told MadameNoir in an interview. “Going to the awards show, and I think just a nomination with three other athletes, is pretty incredible. It doesn’t matter what I’m even up for, I think it’s just super awesome to get a nomination and just be acknowledged for everything that you’ve done in your own sport and all of your accomplishments.

“I think that it’s honestly incredible and I’m just so excited that I was able to be nominated with three other amazing athletes. I think it’s really, really cool.”

The American’s red-on-red look for the ESPYs red carpet also won big in style polls, getting picked up as one of the night’s best dressed athletes.

Stephens edged out her fellow WTA Grand Slam winners Garbiñe Muguruza, Caroline Wozniacki and Simona Halep to win the Best Female Tennis Player category, and she also earned a nomination for Best Breakthrough Athlete.

The American's run to the 2017 US Open title turned heads last year, claiming her maiden Grand Slam title just two months after making her comeback to the tour after a foot surgery left her sidelined for almost a year.

She backed up her big win this year as well, claiming the Miami Open trophy and reaching the French Open final. As a result she sits near the top of the WTA rankings at World No.3, the highest-ranked American player on the tour.
