As the Race heads to San Jose, Chanda Rubin gives advice on who you should pick for WTA Fantasy Tennis.
CHANDA RUBIN'S FANTASY PICKS:
Serena Williams
"Serena Williams has once again proven that she can raise her level with relatively few matches under her belt. With a strong showing at Roland Garros and a runner-up finish at Wimbledon, Serena is moving more instinctively, hitting her serve more confidently, and is showing even more determination post pregnancy. She is only getting better and has to be considered a favorite at every event she plays going into the US Open."
Madison Keys
“Madison Keys is a player with big weapons and when she puts it all together, she has shown that she can be a contender on any surface. After a successful semi-final campaign at Roland Garros, Madison had a disappointing Wimbledon, but she is moving back to hard courts where she has had her biggest success; her big serve and forehand should help make her a San Jose favorite.”
Venus Williams
“After a stellar 2017, this year has been up and down for Venus Williams but her self-belief and ability to compete are tremendous weapons particularly on the American hard courts. Venus may hope to draw upon solid QF and SF results in the Sunshine Double earlier this year as well as recent clutch tennis during the World Team Tennis season and will be one of the players to watch in San Jose.”
Garbine Muguruza
“Spanish No.1 Garbine Muguruza has been solid this summer getting to the SF at Roland Garros but struggled at Wimbledon, losing early as the defending champ. But Garbine at her best is a big match player and if she can get past the early round nerves, with her power and fearlessness in big moments, she could be a contender for the San Jose title.”
Looking to take a chance on your picks? Check out Chanda Rubin's sleeper picks:
“Victoria Azarenka may be one or two matches away from a big result and having just gotten to the mixed doubles final at Wimbledon may give her an added boost in confidence. Not being seeded means that Vika will have to navigate tougher early round draws but she is as fit as ever post baby and has played some of the best tennis of her career on the hard courts of the US.”
“As one of the breakout players of 2018, Mihaela Buzarnescu has quickly moved up the ranks and has become a consistent and dangerous seed at the majors this year. She is very solid from the back of the court, moves well, has an underrated lefty serve, and seems to confidently handle different speeds and pace of shots from her opponents; she could create some upsets in the San Jose draw.”
“Danielle Collins, the two-time NCAA champ has made big strides in a short period of time, climbing into the top 50 players in the world on the strength of her results in 2018, her first full year on the WTA tour. Collins is a gritty competitor with a very balanced game and impressive confidence for a player with so little tour experience. After her SF showing at Miami earlier this year and a solid summer of competing in big events, Collins could be a dangerous floater in San Jose.”
“Since winning the girls' 18s Nationals a few years ago, Sofia ‘Sonya’ Kenin has steadily risen to No.64 in the world with an impressive focus, work ethic, and grit for someone so young. She has a solid baseline game and her competitive skills helped her get her first win over a Top 10 player this summer. She has tremendous confidence having just won a $60k event in California and will be tough to beat on the US hardcourts.”
