SAN JOSE, CA, USA - Top seed Garbiñe Muguruza was forced to withdraw from the Mubadala Silicon Volley Classic on Wednesday with a right arm injury.

The Spaniard was set to feature in the marquee match of Wednesday's night session against Victoria Azarenka, a second-round encounter and the first match for Muguruza this week.

"I’ve been feeling some pain in my right arm for a couple of days and realized I am not ready to play the match, so hopefully I can recover for the next tournaments," Muguruza said in a statement.

"The facilities in San Jose are very nice, especially the courts. This is a tournament I always play at the start of the US Open Series so I hope to come back and see all my fans next year."

Muguruza was looking to begin her North American summer in San Jose, in her first tournament since losing in the second round of her title defense at Wimbledon to Alison van Uytvanck.

The World No.7 was a semifinalist at last year's event, held at Stanford University, where she lost to eventual champion Madison Keys.

Lucky loser Anna Blinkova of Russia replaces Muguruza in the draw to play Azarenka, with the match slated to begin at 7 p.m. local time.
