SEOUL, South Korea - Sara Sorribes Tormo survived a wild start to her KEB Hana Bank-Incheon Airport Korea Open campaign, knocking out British hotshot Heather Watson, 6-3, 0-6, 6-1.
Starting play on Seoul's Centre Court, the 20-year-old Spaniard shook off a second-set bagel - and 13 double faults - to break serve four times in the final set against Watson, a former World No.38, to advance into the second round after one hour and 36 minutes.
The win was an important one for Sorribes Tormo, who had gone 0-3 during the North American summer hardcourt swing, including a first-round loss at the US Open. She will aim to continue this momentum against either No.3 seed Kristyna Pliskova or local wildcard Han Na-Lae, one of whom will await in the next round.
