Chase for No.1: The Singapore Seven vying for year-end No.1

SINGAPORE - With up to 1,500 points available at next week's BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, seven women have the opportunity to finish their season as the prestigious year-end No.1. Since the advent of computerized rankings in 1975, 25 women have held the No.1 ranking but only 12 women have finished the season as the year-end No.1.

World No.1 Simona Halep comes into Singapore as the top seed, after taking over the top spot after the China Open two weeks ago. Halep holds a narrow 40-point lead over No.2 Garbiñe Muguruza. French Open champion and World No.7 Jelena Ostapenko sits 1,165 points behind Halep.

1. Simona Halep: 5,675 points
2. Garbiñe Muguruza: 5,635 points
3. Karolina Pliskova: 5,105 points
4. Elina Svitolina: 5,000 points
5. Venus Williams: 4,642 points
6. Caroline Wozniacki: 4,640 points
7. Jelena Ostapenko: 4,510 points

The Finals offer a maximum of 1,500 points to the champion, depending on a player's record in the group stage. A player who goes 3-0 through their group will take 750 points into the semifinals, compared to a player who goes 2-1 and earns 625 points. With the point spread so close between the seven women vying for year-end No.1, every match will matter in Singapore, regardless of whether a player has secured advancement into the semifinals.  

A player's point tally through the group stage becomes the base upon which semifinal, runner-up, or champion points are added. A player who goes 3-0 in group and wins the title will go home with 1,500 points. A player who goes 1-2 in group and wins the title will go home with 1,250 points.
