MOSCOW, Russia - France's Kristina Mladenovic called her late-season adversity a 'great lesson,' as the top seed met the media at the VTB Kremlin Cup in Moscow on Monday.

The Saint Petersburg Ladies' Open champion was candid with respect to her summer swoon to WTA Insider in Wuhan, and put a positive spin on her current skid as she gets set to begin her campaign at Russia's other Premier-level event.

"My schedule until Wimbledon and US Open was fine, but I realized now that I made a mistake after US Open with too many tournaments on my schedule," Mladenovic said.

The World No.13 had a breakthrough first half of 2017, winning her first Premier-level title in Saint Petersburg in February, three other finals including the Premier Mandatory event at the Madrid Open, and the quarterfinals of her home Grand Slam at Roland Garros.

However, Mladenovic has struggled with injury since Wimbledon, and is currently in the midst of a nine-match losing skid - all of which came in straight sets.

"I cannot go back, but I definitely learned from it and it was a great lesson for sure. I will do some things differently next year," Mladenovic said. "I had some issues after Wimbledon with my knee. I tore the inside ligament of my knee when I fell down in my second round match, and then I came back from the holidays and that problem was solved.

"I had some issue because of compensation and I couldn’t handle the pain and I thought that I would keep playing like this, because it was not the right period to take a break, but it definitely was a wrong choice."

However, the French No.2 shared on social media earlier this week that her knee has responded well to treatment over the past two weeks, and she looks to finish the season on a positive note.

Currently No.10 in the Porsche Race to Singapore, Mladenovic can clinch the second alternate spot at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, if she out-performs American CoCo Vandeweghe this week, and is also on course to compete at the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai.

The Frenchwoman is the top seed in Moscow, and will face the winner of Monday's first round match between Hungary's Timea Babos and Belarus' Aliaksandra Sasnovich in her first match.

"I’m very happy to be back in Moscow," Mladenovic added. "I really like the tournament, I’ve been coming for several years and it feels different now. It feels actually very nice to be the top seed in such a great event.

"I came a little bit earlier so I can give myself better chances to be well-prepared for the tournament. I hope I can do it."
