MATCH POINTS
Xiyu Wang is seeking to equal her career-best main draw victory against WTA World No.61 Ons Jabeur. She also beat Monica Puig, who was at that same ranking, in Miami.
Jabeur has lost three of her last four meetings against Chinese players, including a defeat against Lin Zhu in Wuhan qualifying. She was also knocked out of Shenzhen by Wang Yafan at the beginning of the year.
Samantha Stosur’s only previous experience against Yulia Putintseva came back in 2014, when she claimed a straight-sets victory in Osaka. She was ranked 104 places better than the Kazak going into that match, so she is WTA World No.91, 55 spots below her rival.
Caroline Garcia was the No.2 seed when she won this tournament last year. She went through the whole week without dropping a set, defeating Petra Martic, Hsieh Su-wei and Karolina Pliskova on the way.
Garcia was pushed hard by Wang Yafan when they met previously, in Beijing last year. The Frenchwoman ultimately prevailed, 7-6(10), 6-7(4), 6-3.
Her exit to Zhang Shuai at Wimbledon this year broke a five-match winning run the French star had over Chinese opponents. Her career record in WTA main draws stands 9-4 in her favor.
Rebecca Peterson, who defeated Venus Williams in round one, has never faced Wang Xinyu previously.
