MATCH POINTS
Wang Yafan is the only one of 11 Chinese players left in the draw. Only Peng Shuai has previously reached the final of the tournament as a home player.
Rebecca Peterson, Veronika Kudermetova and Magda Linette all qualified through the second round as a result of their opponents retiring.
Peterson defeated Wang in their only previous meeting. That was four years go in Guangzhou, with the Swede coming out on top in three sets.
Ons Jabeur and Yulia Putintseva will face off for the first time.
Jabeur’s last quarterfinal came on the grass of Eastbourne, while the last time she reached this stage of a hard court event was in Moscow, almost exactly a year ago.
Linette, the No.8 seed, overcame Heather Watson, 6-2, 6-1, in qualifying for Beijing just 13 days ago.
Watson’s victory over Wang Qiang was her first Top 30 success since overcoming Anastasija Sevastova at Wimbledon 2017.
The Brit did not have a hard court victory to her credit on the WTA Tour in 2019 coming into this week, but now has a couple under her belt.
Veronika Kudermetova has a 4-4 record on Tour against players in the Top 25. She recently defeated WTA World No.10 Belinda Bencic in Wuhan.
Dayana Yastremska hit an impressive 32 winners as she defeated Peng, 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday to reach her fifth quarterfinal of the year.
