This will be the first meeting between World No.1 Naomi Osaka and former Top 15 player Yanina Wickmayer. This is Osaka's fourth showing in Miami, and she is seeking her first trip past the third round at the event.

Serena Williams, an eight-time Miami Open champion, will take on Sweden's Rebecca Peterson in their first clash. Williams' most recent title at Miami came in 2015, when she beat Carla Suarez Navarro in the final. Last year, Williams fell to Osaka in the first round in Miami, in her second WTA event after the birth of her daughter.

Three-time Miami champion Venus Williams has a 6-3 head-to-head lead on her second-round opponent, Suarez Navarro. Williams has won their last four matches, but Suarez Navarro's most recent victory over the American came in Miami in 2015, en route to the Spaniard's finalist showing.

Bianca Andreescu shot from World No.60 to World No.24 in the WTA rankings after winning her first WTA singles title at Indian Wells on Sunday. Her last loss came in the Acapulco semifinals -- to her second-round opponent in Miami, Sofia Kenin.

Defending champion Sloane Stephens lost to Ons Jabeur in their only previous meeting, at Moscow last year. Jabeur went on to reach the final of that event, while Stephens rebounded by reaching the championship match of the WTA Finals one week later.

Simona Halep has a 2-0 head-to-head lead on Taylor Townsend. Halep beat Townsend in the second round of the 2018 French Open, on her way to her first-ever Grand Slam title.
