Making fourth appearance at Roland Garros, Naomi Osaka enters French Open as the No.1 seed – her first time being the top seed at a Grand Slam.
Her opponent, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, is making her sixth appearance at Roland Garros, where she reached the third round in 2014, upsetting Venus Williams along the way.
Defending champion Simona Halep, the No.3 seed, opens her tournament against Australia Ajla Tomljanovic. She is bidding to be first player to defend the Roland Garros title since Justine Henin, who completed a three-peat from 2005-07.
Halep is also bidding to be first player to defend a Grand Slam title since Serena Williams won consecutive Wimbledon titles from 2015-16. She has defended a title once in her career, on the clay of Madrid in 2016-17.
Home favorite and No.22 seed Caroline Garcia looks to earn her first win against a German player at Roland Garros when she opens against Mona Barthel. She owns 1-3 record against German players at majors, but is 0-2 at Roland Garros.
2018 semifinalist Madison Keys, the No.14 seed, opens her tournament with a Grand Slam rematch against Russian veteran Evgeniya Rodina, who beat her at last year's Wimbledon Championships en route to a career-best fourth round showing.
