PARIS, France -- No.22 seed Bianca Andreescu of Canada has pulled out of Roland Garros with a right shoulder injury prior to her second-round match against Sofia Kenin of the United States.

The 18-year-old, who skyrocketed up the rankings following her tremendous title run at the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, had been struggling with shoulder issues since that event, and had not played a match between a retirement to Anett Kontaveit at the Miami Open in March and the French Open.

In her first match back since Miami, Andreescu needed three hours and two minutes to overcome lucky loser Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic in the Roland Garros first round, in a match which was interrupted by darkness and spanned two days.

Andreescu was slated to play World No.34 Kenin in what was expected to be a highly competitive second-round encounter. Kenin had beaten Andreescu in the Acapulco semifinals in February, but Andreescu exacted revenge in the second round at Miami one month later.

Kenin moves into the third round via walkover, her third appearance in the round of 32 at a Grand Slam event following back-to-back third round showings at the US Open in the past two years. The American could face her compatriot and No.10 seed Serena Williams in the third round, if Williams gets by Japanese qualifier Kurumi Nara in the second round on Thursday.

Andreescu's withdrawal was announced almost simultaneously with another stunning ailment experienced by a highly regarded seed, as No.4 seed Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands withdrew from her second-round match due to a GI illness while trailing Viktoria Kuzmova at 3-1 in the first set.

Earlier on Wednesday, Kateryna Kozlova also withdrew from the event prior to her second-round meeting with her fellow Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, due to a viral illness. This allowed No.9 seed Svitolina to advance to the third round via walkover.
