BIRMINGHAM, Great Britain - No.8 seed Julia Goerges rounded out the semifinal line-up at the Nature Valley Classic with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva in the final quarterfinal match on Friday.
The big-hitting German fired 31 winners and nine aces over the course of the 74-minute match, as she never lost serve and saved all four break points she faced to improve her head-to-head against Putintseva to 4-0, all in straight sets.
"I think today was my best match throughout the week, and I felt like I'm improving match by match, which is always nice to see. Especially I was very happy the way my serve worked today," Goerges said.
"I was very patient and waiting for my opportunities, but when there was one, I made really less unforced errors and I just really went for it. So I can be very happy with that."
Coming off of her first career win against a reigning World No.1 in Naomi Osaka in the previous round, the two-time French Open quarterfinalist managed parity with her German foe just once in the match.
The pair traded holds of serve over the first two games, but a break to 15 in the fourth game of the opener gave the German a lead she never relinquished.
From 1-1, Goerges won 12 of the next 14 points to take command at 4-1, and staved off all four break point chances in a seventh game where she rallied from 0-40 down to hold.
In the second set, the No.8 seed was similarly quick out of the gates, as she took her fifth break point in the first game and added an insurance break in the fifth.
Goerges did not miss a first serve in the second set until the match's final game, as she surrended just three points in three service games in the set overall to cruise into her second semifinal of the season.
"I think that's just a little mental aspect in the back of your head that you know you have been successful against her, and I just remembered what I've done at that time to be successful, so I tried it again today," said Goerges of her favorable head-to-head against the Kazakh.
"It never means that it's gonna work and work out that well again there are always matchups where one player maybe likes it a bit more to face the other one.
"Every match starts from zero, so you never know how it's going to end, but I think in general I did a good job."
In the semifinals, Goerges will face Petra Martic for the first time in 11 years, after the latter pulled off a dramatic escape to defeat Jelena Ostapenko earlier in the day on Friday.

"Tomorrow will be completely different game style, as well. I think Petra has a little bit more of an aggressive part of her serve than Yulia today. She's taller, Petra," Goerges assessed.
"I think overall I don't need to focus on my opponent that much, just more on my game, trying to serve well, trying to be aggressive, the same what I did today, but I think the pace will be a little bit different tomorrow. We'll see how it goes.
"If I serve well, I know it's tough for everyone who I'm facing. It's one of my biggest weapons. If I strike the ball normal, I think has pretty good pace already, so I don't need to go crazy sometimes with it. It's all about legs, it's about movement, it's about little parts of the game. If I do that well, I know how dangerous I am."
