LAUSANNE, Switzerland - No.2 seed Caroline Garcia eased through her opening-round test at the Ladies Open Lausanne, needing two sets against Germany’s Antonia Lottner to advance.

Garcia came into the clay court event looking to rediscover the consistency she’d found during the grass swing, where she claimed her first title of the season at Nottingham and recorded a quarterfinal run at Mallorca.

“For me, I think it’s easier going from grass to clay than from clay to grass,” Garcia told wtatennis.com after the match. “It’s always fun to have one month on grass, but one month is enough,” she joked.

Up against No.190-ranked Lottner at the Tennis-Club Stade-Lausanne, Garcia broke three times and save all four break points she faced en route to a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win.

“It was a bit tricky conditions, very windy and not as warm as in previous days,” Garcia said. “I’m pleased with the game I played. I think I was solid, which is important in the first rounds.”

The win puts Garcia through to the second round here for just the second time, having previously reached this stage in 2017 at the tournament’s former location in Gstaad.

“It’s so nice to play in Switzerland and having this brand new tournament coming from Gstaad,” Garcia said. “I’m very excited to play here because it’s close to France. I have family coming so it’s very exciting for me.

“It’s complicated for family to come and see you because you are travelling very far. But this isn’t too far from Lyon, so I was very happy that they can come.”

The Frenchwoman will try to score a first Lausanne quarterfinal berth in her next match, where she’ll take on Bernarda Pera of the United States. Pera had little trouble against qualifier Guilia Gatto-Monticone, advancing 6-0, 6-3.
