Ashleigh Barty has never before been past the third round in Cincinnati, which she achieved in the past two years, losing to Caroline Wozniacki in 2017 and Simona Halep last year.

The Australian has lost just three times to players outside the Top 10 this year - No.63 Kristina Mladenovic in Rome, No.55 Alison Riske at Wimbledon, and No.29 Sofia Kenin in Toronto.

Barty has never played Svetlana Kuznetsova before.

This is the Russian's first semifinal at Premier level or above since Madrid in 2017.

Sofia Kenin beat compatriot Madison Keys in their only previous encounter, which was earlier this year, on clay in Rome - 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-4.

Kenin defeated then-No.1-ranked Ashleigh Barty last week in Toronto and defeated current No.1 Naomi Osaka in the quarterfinals in Cincinnati. It is the first time since October 2001 that a player has defeated No.1-ranked opponents in consecutive weeks.
