World No.3 Karolina Pliskova continues to lead the WTA Insider Hard Court Power Rankings as the tour turns to the final Slam of the season at the US Open, which begins on Monday.
The WTA Insider Hard Court Power Rankings are based on an empirical formula that isolates a player's success rate on hard courts. To measure a player's recent aptitude on the surface, the Insider team applied the following formula, which takes into account a player's results over the last four seasons:
100% of points earned on hard courts in 2019
75% of points earned on hard courts in 2018
50% of points earned on hard courts in 2017
25% of points earned on hard courts in 2016
The resulting sum accounts for a player's "Hard Court Index."
The North American hardcourt summer yielded four surprising winners across the US Open Series. The swing began with China's Zheng Saisai taking home the title at the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose, California, and America's Jessica Pegula winning her first WTA title at the Citi Open in Washington DC.
The tour's biggest summer events were won by players ranked outside the Top 15, each of whom won their home tournaments. Canada's 18-year-old sensation Bianca Andreescu won her hometown event at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, defeating Serena Williams by retirement in the final. America's Madison Keys then won her second title of the year at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, defeating Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final.
After a summer of surprises, will the tour's hardcourt stalwarts re-assert their supremacy in New York?
