US Open champion Bianca Andreescu has been rewarded for her stellar run in New York by climbing to WTA World No.5, a leap of 10 spots on the ranking and a new career best for the 19-year-old Canadian, who is the latest member of the Grand Slam champions club.
Andreescu stormed past Serena Williams, 6-3, 7-5, to pick up her first major title, capping a remarkable year that began with a run to the final of Auckland in January and saw her pick up a Premier Mandatory title in Indian Wells before missing nearly two months with injury.

She returned from a shoulder problem as strong as ever, winning Toronto, in which Serena retired in the final, then stormed through the draw at Flushing Meadows to keep her on an as-yet-unbroken 13-match winning streak.
Not only has she broken into the Top 10 for the first time as a result, she is into the Top 5, meaning she has climbed over 100 spots on the ranking since January, which she started as WTA World No.107.

At the very summit, meanwhile, Ashleigh Barty has regained her status as WTA World No.1, which she lost on August 11.
The Australian suffered a last-16 exit at Flushing Meadows but the loss of Naomi Osaka at the same stage means that the Japanese failed to defend the points she won as she lifted the title 12 months previous and has hence slipped down the standings.
Here are the other notable movers in the WTA Rankings for the week beginning September 9, 2019.
Belinda Bencic (+2, No.12 to No.10): A run to the semifinals in New York included victories over Donna Vekic and Naomi Osaka, and the Swiss is rewarded with a return to the Top 10, where she was last in June 2016.
Johanna Konta (+5, No.16 to No.11): The British No.1’s run to the quarterfinals in New York means that she has hit her highest ranking since March 2018 and stands on the brink of a return to the Top 10 for the first time in 18 months.
Wang Qiang (+6, No.18 to No.12): Found Serena Williams too powerful in the quarterfinals at the US Open but prior to that had not lost a set, unseating Barty along the way.
Donna Vekic (+2, No.23 to No.21): A new career-high ranking for the Croatian player, who reached the quarterfinals in New York.
Julia Goerges (+5, No.25 to No.30): The German has made a healthy jump up the ranking after a strong showing at the US Open, which ended in the last 16. Notably beat Kiki Bertens.
Magda Linette (+8, No.53 to No.45): Victory over Astra Sharma at the US Open has allowed the Pole to break the Top 50 for the first time.
Ons Jabeur (+11, No.62 to No.51): Africa’s No.1 player defeated Caroline Garcia in New York and pushed Karolina Pliskova all the way before a third-round exit but has made good progress up the rankings.
Fiona Ferro (+13, No.74 to No.61): Enjoyed her best run at a major in the US Open, where she made the third round. The 22-year-old has hit a new career-best ranking in the process.
Andrea Petkovic (+11, No.88 to No.77): Took the notable scalp of Petra Kvitova at the year’s final major and makes a leap of more than 10 spots back up the rankings.
Taylor Townsend (+33, No.116 to No.83): A sensational US Open run saw her dispatch Simona Halep after qualifying. Ultimately lost in the fourth round but bounces to her highest ranking since April.
Timea Babos (+20, No. 112 to No.92): Qualified for the main draw in New York before reaching the second round and powers into the Top 100 for the first time since February as a consequence.
Kristie Ahn (+48, No.141 to No.93): The 27-year-old has broken the Top 100 for the first time after a run to the last 16 of the US Open, where she was a wildcard. Major winners Svetlana Kuznetsova and Jelena Ostapenko were among her scalps.
Coco Gauff (+34, No.140 to No.106): The 15-year-old sensation stands on the brink of the Top 100 after winning two three-set matches in New York before falling to Naomi Osaka. She continues her rapid rise up the rankings.
