MATCH POINTS

Venus Williams won her only previous meeting with Sorana Cirstea, prevailing in straight sets in Miami eight years ago. Victory for the Romanian on Saturday would equal her best showing at the tournament, having also made the last 32 in 2013, when she lost to Agnieszka Radwanska.

Both of Serena Williams' meetings with Kiki Bertens before this week have taken place at Grand Slams. The returning American won against the Dutchwoman at both the US Open in 2015 and the French Open a year later.

Victoria Azarenka seeks to continue her 100% record against Sloane Stephens on Saturday, having beaten the American three times - all at the Australian Open. The Belarussian emerged victorious from three successive Melbourne meetings of the pair, between 2013 and 2015. Stephens hopes to make the last 32 for a third time, previously making that stage in 2014 and 2015.

Caroline Garcia, hoping the make the last 32 at Indian Wells for the third time in four years, beat Jennifer Brady in their only previous meeting, triumphing in straight sets on the Strasbourg clay last year.
