ZHENGZHOU, China - World No.139 Zheng Saisai scored an opening round stunner over No.2 seed Peng Shuai to kick off the action at the 2018 Biyuan Cup Zhengzhou Women’s Tennis Open, a WTA 125K Series event.

Zheng came into the matchup having lost all four of her previous encounters against Peng, including their latest a year ago here in the Zhengzhou semifinals.

She had to fight hard to get her revenge - she came back from a set down in both sets, and saved four set points in the tiebreak - but emerged victorious 7-6(8), 6-2 after just over two hours on court.

The No.3 seed Luksika Kumkhum was also unlucky in the first round, falling in a heartbreaker to American Danielle Lao, ranked No.241. Kumkhum held set points in both sets - one in the first and a dizzying eight in the second - but she couldn’t convert as Lao held firm to deny her nine times, taking the match 7-6(0), 7-6(10) after a two-hour battle.

Also in action, No.6 seed Yanina Wickmayer made her way into the second round after fighting past former World No.2 Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-4; Mai Minokoshi eased past Tan Ran 6-0, 6-2; and Jang Su-Jeong advanced 6-2, 6-4 over Ayano Shimizu.

Chinese wildcard Wang Xiyu knocked out Naomi Broady 6-4, 7-5; No.8 seed Zhu Lin scored a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 win over Gao Xinyu; while Wang Yafan rounded out a banner day for Chinese players with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Junri Namigata.
