ISTANBUL, Turkey - Reigning Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki made a seamless transition to clay courts on Tuesday, dispatching Ekaterina Alexandrova, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the second round of the TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Cup.

"It was tricky, for sure," she said after the match. "The first match on clay is never easy, but I'm happy with the win. It's great just to get a match in, and feel better with the movement. It's all about fine-tuning in matches like these."

Wozniacki converted five of six break point opportunities to secure victory in 68 minutes.

The Dane, who returned to the WTA No.1 ranking following her maiden major triumph in Melbourne, last played in Istanbul in 2014 as a summer hardcourt warm-up for that year's US Open.

Battling Alexandrova's explosive offense, she maintained clean stats throughout, striking seven winners to nine unforced errors - compared to the Russian's 13/17 stat differential.

Standing between Wozniacki and a spot in the quarterfinals will be either Sara Errani or Kirsten Flipkens, who kick off Center Court play on Wednesday.

"I'll go out and hit for an hour and a half tomorrow to try and find my rhythm. The most important part is getting the movement down.

"I'm using this as a preparation for the next few weeks, because the French Open is obviously around the corner. There's lots to look forward to, and I want to keep feeling like I'm getting into the groove on clay."
