BUCHAREST, Romania - Claro Open Colsanitias champion Anna Karolina Schmiedlova ended Day 2 action at the BRD Bucharest Open with a 4-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 upset over No.6 seed Ana Bogdan.

Bogdan was playing in front of her home crowd at a WTA tournament for the first time since debuting inside the Top 100, and served for the match against Schmiedlova in the second set before the former World No.26 turned the tide and claimed victory after three hours and 18 minutes on Centre Court.

Schmiedlova is in the midst of a comeback season after two years of injuries and inconsistencies that saw her fall as low as World No.273 last year. The 23-year-old returned to the Top 100 back in April when she won her third career WTA title in Bogota.

After losing the opening set, she raced out to a 5-1 lead in the second; despite losing five straight games, she broke back to love and won the eventual tie-break to level the match.

Down 3-1 in the decider, Schmiedova won four straight games and held two match points only for Bogdan to save both and break straight back.

The Slovak made no mistake in her second opportunity to serve out the match, holding to love and booking a second round clash with either Jasmine Paolini or 2017 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix champion Laura Siegemund.

More to come...
