QUEBEC CITY, Canada -- Pauline Parmentier’s magical year continued at the Coupe Banque Nationale présentée par IGA on Sunday, as the No.8 seed from France dispatched American qualifier Jessica Pegula, 7-5, 6-2, to win her second title of 2018.

"It was amazing," Parmentier said during a thank-you message to her fans after the match. "I won two titles this year, it's just incredible. I'm really, really happy."

Following one hour and 26 minutes of play in Quebec City, World No.69 Parmentier added to her championship trophy from Istanbul earlier this year, making 2018 the first season in the 32-year-old Frenchwoman’s career where she claims multiple singles titles.

Parmentier now has won four WTA singles titles in her career, and indeed has extended her perfect record in WTA singles finals to 4-0, having also defeated Victoria Azarenka to win Tashkent in 2007 and Lucie Hradecka to emerge victorious at Bad Gastein in 2008.

World No.227 Pegula used her aggressive play to put up a valiant effort in her first WTA singles final, but Parmentier withstood five aces from the American and claimed half of Pegula's second service points to win the match. Parmentier also saved three of four break points against her, while breaking Pegula's serve four times.

The first set was a hard-hitting affair, as both players attempted to take control of points with their forehands on the quick Quebec City courts. It was 24-year-old Pegula who came out of the blocks fastest, returning strongly and breaking for 3-1 following a successful backhand drop shot, before holding with an ace in a tough game to claim a 4-1 lead.

But Parmentier drew back on serve at 4-3 following a number of unforced errors by Pegula, and the Frenchwoman began to succeed by increasing the depth on her forehand, as she maneuvered to a 4-4 deadlock. 

Pegula then found herself in trouble while serving at 5-5, and though the American saved two break points, the second with an ace, Parmentier converted a third with a forehand winner to go up 6-5 and serve for the set. In that game, the French player regrouped from a 0-30 deficit to close out the set four points later on another forehand winner which landed just inside the baseline.

Parmentier continued to hold the momentum as the second set got underway, as the Frenchwoman directed the majority of her shots away from the Pegula forehand, and was rewarded with a backhand error from the American to claim a break in the first game.

Pegula’s next service game was lengthy and again went the way of Parmentier, as the 8th seed opened up a 4-0 lead in the set before Pegula could get on the scoreboard. The American had two break points at 4-1 to claw one break back, but solid serving at crucial moments by Parmentier allowed her to hold on for 5-1.

In the next game, Parmentier raced to 0-40, reaching triple match point, but two powerful forehands and an ace by Pegula erased all three, and the American held for 5-2, putting the pressure squarely on Parmentier to serve out the match. The Frenchwoman was up to the task, needing only one chance in the subsequent game to complete her title run in Canada.
