STANFORD, CA, USA - No.6 seed CoCo Vandeweghe dropped just two games in an all-American clash against Stanford local Nicole Gibbs to take the last spot into the Bank of the West Classic quarterfinals.

The only previous these two met was 12 months ago at this same tournament, where Gibbs surged ahead to grab the opening set before Vandeweghe completed the comeback 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

But this time around, it was decidedly less complicated for Vandeweghe, as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory in just an hour and four minutes.

The first set saw Vandeweghe, a runner-up here in 2012, play nearly perfect tennis against an increasingly frustrated Gibbs.

The former Stanford student, ranked No.128, could barely get a racquet on Vandeweghe’s booming first serves. Vandeweghe dropped just three points on serve during the whole set and didn’t face a single break point, picking off Gibs at will and teeing up to hit winners off both wings.

But Gibbs took advantage of a letdown early in the second set to get a foothold into the match, holding serve for the first time and immediately bringing up three break points in the next game.

Vandeweghe didn’t let Gibbs enjoy it for too long though, brushing aside her only break chances and getting right back on track. She calmly reeled off the last five games in a row to wrap up the match and secure her return to the Stanford quarterfinals.

“My game is not to be defensive, that’s for sure,” Vandeweghe said in her post-match press conference. “But I think today’s match was a little bit more than serve. I feel that I was playing very well off the ground, too.

“When you bagel somebody, you’re playing a lot better than just serving. I was playing well, moving well, and having a good time out there.”

The American will face No.4 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the next round after the Russian battled past Alison Riske 6-4, 6-0 earlier in the day.
