TOKYO, Japan - Qualifier Zarina Diyas came out on top in the all-Kazakh clash at the Japan Women's Open, beating eighth seed Yulia Putintseva 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

The 23-year-old had already beaten second seed Zhang Shuai in the round of 16 as well as Misaki Doi in the first round.

She next faces Christina McHale, the tournament's defending champion, who beat third seed Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-1.

Elsewhere, the qualifiers continued to progress, as Miyu Kato ended Aleksandra Krunic's fine run, beating her 6-1, 6-3, and Jana Fett of Croatia - who knocked out top seed Kristina Mladenovic earlier in the week - beat Wang Qiang, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
