Jelena Ostapenko has punched her ticket to Singapore after becoming the seventh player to qualify for the 2017 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
The Latvian joins Garbiñe Muguruza, Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki in the singles field, with only one spot remaining.
“I’m extremely happy to qualify for my very first WTA Finals,” Ostapenko said. “I’ve had a great season and hope I can continue to play my best tennis in front of all the fans in Singapore.”
Ostapenko is set to make her debut appearance at the WTA Finals following a breakout season, which saw her win her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros and her career second WTA title at the KEB Hana Bank Incheon Airport Korea Open in Seoul.
The 20-year- old’s season is also highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, a semifinal run at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open and reaching her second major quarterfinal at Wimbledon. Following a third-round run at the US Open, Ostapenko broke into the WTA Top 10 for the first time, landing at No.10 on September 11.
Ostapenko played her first full year on the WTA in 2016, and has since improved her ranking by 76 spots to reach a career-high of No.8, achieved on October 2.
The Top 8 singles players and doubles teams will compete at the 2017 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, staged at the SIngapore Sports Hub from October 22-29.
